RAK 1W Repeater

Purpose

This repeater is well-suited for on-grid application (no solar). It uses a LIPO charge board to avoid issues with voltage drop on transmit. By using the charging function of a TP4056 but avoiding the output function, we ensure that the LIPO battery is always the source of the current needed to full power the radio to 29+dBm. I also added a bluetooth relay so I can remotely power the radio on and off from the ground, but I won't be covering that here.

To build:

  1. Print this mounting board (specifically for the RAK 1W setup, change for your hardware if necessary): https://www.printables.com/model/1646970-rak-1w-booster-3401-19007-13302-1w-booster-electri

  2. Mount the RAK 1W to the board

  3. Drill the hole for the antenna lug. I use a step bit but use whatever works for an N female panel mount. Install the pigtail adapter.

  4. Optional: Install the cable gland in the bottom of the box. This is optional, but if any moisture gets in it will have a place to go, and you do need this step if you're going to externally power it like this one is. I shove foam in there to prevent bugs from entering.

  5. Install adhesive bluetooth antenna in box.

  6. Install battery/batteries in box. In this build I only used 1 battery because it should be powered almost all the time. The battery is required for the RAK 1W to operate correctly because of the current draw requirements.

  7. Solder the correct connector
